What is online backup service?

Online backup, also known as remote backup, is a technique of offsite data storage wherein files, folders, or the complete contents of a hard drive are periodically backed up on a remote server or system through a network connection.

The underlying principle behind online backup is quite easy. By regularly (or persistently) backing up data on a remote hard drive, the risk of catastrophic data loss due to unexpected fire outbreak, theft, file corruption, or other natural disaster is nearly jettisoned. With a high-speed Internet connection and a Web browser interface, the files and folders remotely stored look like as if they are placed on an external local hard drive. Strong encryption and password protection help to make sure privacy and security.

A number of organizations offer online backup solutions for subscribers whose systems are connected to the Internet, automatically replicate selected files to backup storage at vendor's location. A wide array of online backup services is available to match the needs ranging from those of individual consumers to those of big conglomerates. For SMEs and big enterprises or for predominantly mission critical data, the cost of online backup can prove to be a wise outlay.

In a database, an online backup, more often known as hot backup or dynamic backup, is a backup done on data albeit it is dynamically accessible to users and may presently be in a state of being updated. Online backups can facilitate an appropriate solution in multi-user systems because they don't face any downtime, as does a foreseeable offline (cold) backup.
